Act 250

Act 250, Vermont’s Land Use and Development Act, is a law passed in 1970 by the Vermont legislature designed to mitigate the effects of development through an application process that addresses the environmental and community impacts of projects that exceed a threshold in size.

VCE assists citizens in participation in Act 250 cases. Vermont’s legislature is currently engaged in evaluating ways to update Act 250. VCE is advocating for improving public participation through a collaborative process rather than contested cases at the beginning of the process. For contested cases, VCE recommends establishing a mechanism to provide intervenor funding and a counsel for the public. VCE also supports moving energy siting issues to Act 250.
